HIGH FALLS ECODISTRICTprojects
1,000 Tree Project
Greentopia received a $75,000 tree planting grant from the Department of Environmental Conservation to begin work on the 1,000 Tree Project. Street trees not only beautify and increase walkability of neighborhoods, they also provide health and stormwater runoff benefits. We intend to plant 1,000 trees in and directly around the EcoDistrict. This grant will allow us to plant the first approximately 350 over the next two years!
In an effort to increase outdoor activity and healthy living in the EcoDistrict, we are partnering with the American Heart Association to create a walking loop around the High Falls Gorge on portions of the Genesee Riverway Trail. The EcoLoop will launch in the Spring of 2018!
A portion of the EcoLoop will be a Pollinator Pathway. We will be replacing dead trees with flowering trees, planting butterfly bushes, and seeding the area with a customized pollinator seed mix designed for Upstate New York! The plants will be accompanied by educational signage about the importance of biodiversity and pollinators on our urban ecology.
