The Annual Campaign

Make 2018 extraordinary by investing in our community.

Greetings from Greentopia. It’s that time of the year when we gather with friends and family to celebrate the joys of life – and begin looking forward to the New Year. It is also the season of giving. Now is an important time for Greentopia to reach out to our donors and friends.

We all have special roles and obligations in transforming our community and creating a legacy for future generations to enjoy. I am so proud and energized to be part of this organization, and excited about our launching of the first Ecodistrict in New York State which will become a cradle of innovation and discovery located right at the birthplace of Rochester. The EcoDistrict provides a framework for Greentopia to work with vital partners to create a more vibrant and sustainable urban district grounded in economic, social and environmental equity.

2017 was a time to forge new partnerships that will lead to exciting initiatives in 2018.

Here are just some of the successes we have to report for 2017:

On November 3rd, Monroe Community College announced that the downtown campus, located in the newly formed EcoDistrict, won LEED Gold certification based on the adaptive reuse of Eastman Kodak Headquarters, primarily through the use of green roofs and access to public and alternative transportation options and the use of low-flow plumbing fixtures. MCC invested a little over $600,000 into the infrastructure to make these environmental savings possible and expects a return on its investment in seven years.

At that announcement, Dr. Anne Kress mentioned, “Greentopia as the driving force” behind the creation of the EcoDistrict and “a vital partner” in the school’s push toward sustainability.

In 2017, RG&E generously sponsored our Green Leadership series that brought dynamic speakers, including Steve Curwood from NPR’s Living on EarthShannon Bouton, the CEO of the McKinsey Center for Business and Environment, and Mark Johnson, founder of Civitas Landscape Architects, to engage the community and spark discussion and interest in green innovation.

Greentopia partnered with Genesee Land Trust and recently won a $75,000 DEC grant to plant the first 350 trees of our 1,000 Trees Project in the EcoDistrict and adjacent El Camino and JOSANA neighborhoods. The trees will beautify streets, encourage walking and biking, intercept stormwater runoff and slow traffic patterns. A win for health and well being, more oxygen generation, and a great way to permanently change the hard landscape of the area AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION:

Wellbeing is one of six priorities for the EcoDistrict and Greentopia is partnering with the American Heart Association and the Center for Disability Rights to create an Eco-Loop – an exercise/walking trail that will be accessible to all and will incorporate incentives to encourage district residents and employees alike to be heart healthy.

Greentopia partnered with the City of Rochester during October’s River Romance to sponsor a mini-EcoFest on the Pont de Rennes Bridge. Over 600 people attended and engaged with various vendors and environmental booths, saw live goats eating invasive species along the Genesee River Trail, volunteered to perform major landscaping along the River Trail and drove electric cars provided by XXX. This outreach to our community will continue every year and provide a host of educational opportunities for everyone.

GardenAerial’s Flour Garden… The FlourGarden, first capital project of The GardenAerial Project, on Browns Race was lush and green the entire summer and fall. Even though the fountains have now been winterized, I would still encourage you to come see the fall colors, walk across the Ponte de Rennes Bridge, and enjoy our magnificent waterfall.

Also, make sure to check out the now grassy parkland that was once the Beebee Power Station. This view now affords a glimpse into what could be the site of a new river park and mixed-use use development. Greentopia continues to work towards the vision of creating a 21st-century public green space centered at High Falls.

Green Visions–Ready to start its 6th Year!… In addition to these partnerships, our signature community project, GreenVisions, continues to be one of the most successful workforce development programs in the City of Rochester.  We now own four vacant lots on the corner of Smith and Whitney.

In 2017, we employed fifteen 18 – 21-year-olds and two special needs youths to grow flowers that were sold at Wegmans and the public market. 2018 will see the placement of a modified shipping container on one of the lots that will include a refrigeration unit for keeping our flowers fresh and a workstation for making bouquets.

Look for an upcoming article in nationally distributed Country Garden Magazine in 2018 that features Rochester and the success of the GreenVisions program. Green Visions was also featured in a recent state-wide film showcasing Greentopia as a model workforce development program for the State of New York.

And with your help, we can achieve even more… Thank you so much for your past support whether it was buying a ticket to our fabulous Dinner on the Bridge, being a corporate sponsor, volunteering for an event, attending a Greentopia function, or talking about our mission with a friend.

Please take a moment to dig a little deeper and support our Annual Campaign. Every dollar counts towards helping Greentopia continue its exciting work and brings us all closer to a more vibrant, sustainable, and equitable community.

We have a very special opportunity for you today to visibly and permanently demonstrate and become part of the creation of a flourishing Rochester.

We all have special roles and obligations in transforming our community and creating a legacy for future generations to enjoy. Whether you choose to donate $5, $25 or $100, by making a tax-deductible donation by December 31, 2017, your gift will help meet this community challenge and go twice as far towards making 2014 extraordinary. We have ambitious plans for the year ahead.

The past year has truly been an incredible journey for Greentopia – a year filled with recognition and immeasurable rewards. This would not have been possible without the support from you – and our diverse community of friends and neighbors. We hope that you will be part of this continuous journey.

All of us as Greentopia wish you a happy holiday season and all the best in 2018.
